Coconut oil has been around a long, long time.
Nobody really knows who first came up with the bright idea to extract oil from coconut meat, but we do know that its use was already documented in the Ayurveda tradition of medicine of India in 1,500 BCE in diverse areas relating to the body, mind and spirit.
Before the Second World War, people in tropical countries such as the Philippines and Sri Lanka consumed a diet that incorporated coconut oil. Conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease were essentially non-existent. Traditional doctors even used coconut oil to treat conditions such as constipation, cough, jaundice, skin infections, typhoid, fever, flu, and much more.
Researchers and scientists in the 1950s even began to come up with research about coconut oil and its benefits. Their findings made coconut oil even more popular, and it increasingly continued being consumed up to the 1980s.
Then all of a sudden, people who had made coconut oil a lifestyle stopped consuming it. This is attributed to a study by ASA (American Soybean Association) that claimed that coconut oil was a saturated oil and would therefore lead to heart-related problems. This was a deadly mistake.
Over the last decade, the claims that coconut oil is dangerous has been debunked. More research is being conducted on VCO and more people are beginning to accept a truth that was buried by individuals who had a selfish motive. Coconut oil does not contain cholesterol (this is explained in a later article). Indeed, research actually shows that the tropical countries that still use coconut oil have the lowest incidents of coronary heart disease.
